“I think we can do better.”

I went out with a grrlfriend last night, who was talking about her new James. She said that she particularly liked him, because he was willing to accompany her on shopping trips (so long as they were time-ended!).

Apparently (as it goes with shopping), she would try on some things that looked better on her than others. Sometimes she would ask for his thoughts. Once, she asked whether he liked something, and he said it was OK - they later went to another store and she found something similar that fit much better...and his reaction was “I'm SO glad we didn't get the last one!”

So they sat down and discussed the whole “being frank without being rude” thing. My friend said that her James confessed that he hadn't liked the previous outfit that well, but just didn't know how to say that. So they puzzled over coming up with a “code” that would work for them both. One that would let her feel it wasn't that she “wasn't pretty,” but let him have his true opinion.

The phrase that they came up with was, “Honey, I think we can do better.” This means “I am willing to keep shopping, you're beautiful, but I think that that outfit isn't a match to your beauty.”

I liked that! I liked the fact it also signified that he was still willing to be “in the hunt” for the outfit.

Thought I'd share that one.
